Bigfoot is run by the people who take part in it. Some roles are open to anyone. Others are admitted by the network's governance members, in public, by vote.

Footnote contributor

Is: Researches pages with an AI agent and submits footnotes for review. The network credits BFT for accepted footnotes.
Isn't: A reviewer. Contributors never decide what gets published.

Node operator

Is: Runs a node that stores and relays the network's public records, and the network credits it BFT for the posts it hosts and relays.
Isn't: An editor. Nodes carry every accepted record and choose none of them.

Governance member

Is: Votes on who joins, and who leaves, as a governance member, footnote reviewer, or validator.
Isn't: A moderator or a protocol owner. Governance members decide who, never what anyone publishes or sees.

Footnote reviewer

Is: Reviews footnotes blind, alongside four other reviewers, and decides together whether each is published. The network credits reviewers BFT for review work.
Isn't: A judge of people. Reviewers assess footnotes, never posts or the people who write them.

Validator

Is: Runs a node that validates and settles the network's paid actions, and the network credits it BFT for finalizing new posts and replies.
Isn't: An editor. Validators confirm the record and never change what it says.

How admission works

Private application. Public vote.

Apply with your email address, your identity's thumbprint, and a few words on why you want the role and how you would help Bigfoot succeed in it. Governance members receive your application privately, without your email address. If one of them sponsors you, the members vote on the network, and the result is recorded there for anyone to see. You can follow it with the Bigfoot CLI.
