Notes, highlights, and saved sources

Keep the passages and context you want to return to.

Keeping information

When should I use a bookmark, highlight, or note?

Bookmark a destination you want to revisit. Highlight a passage you want to retain in context. Add a note for your own observation or question. A saved source and your interpretation of it serve different purposes.

Are my local notes published to Bigfoot?

No. Local notes and highlights belong to your browser data. Publishing through a Bigfoot network action is separate. Do not assume that creating a local note sends it to a Space or a public conversation.

Will a highlight always return to the same passage?

Webpages change. The browser uses the captured passage and surrounding information to find its location again, but a removed or substantially changed passage may no longer be locatable. Saving a highlight is not a permanent archive of the entire website.

Research habits

How can I keep a useful research trail?

Keep the source address with a short note about what it supports. Separate quotations from your interpretation, and retain dates when timing matters. Use a tab group or tiled pages to compare sources. See Evaluating information for a practical approach.
