Tabs, groups, and tiling
Keep related pages together and compare them side by side.
Tabs
Where do new tabs go?
New Tab opens in Home in a Regular window. A New Tab control inside a named group opens there. In a Private-only window, new tabs stay Private. Home is the permanent first section of a Regular window.
Can I rename a tab?
Yes. Right-click the tab and choose Rename. The name stays until you change it or reset it to the page’s own title; the page itself isn’t changed.
Can I move a tab to another window?
Right-click it and choose Send to New Window. The tab moves as it is, without reloading, and keeps its Back and Forward history.
Tab groups
How do I organize a project?
Create a named group for the project, then move related tabs into it. Group names describe your work; they do not create a separate account on the websites inside them.
How do I create a group?
Choose New Group at the top of the sidebar and type its name. You can also right-click a tab and choose Move to New Group, or right-click Home and choose Group These Tabs to move all of Home’s tabs into a new group. A group always has at least one tab.
How do I move tabs between groups?
Drag a tab to another group in the sidebar, or right-click it and choose Move to a group. Remove from Group moves a tab back to Home. The tab moves as it is, without reloading.
What is Home?
Home is the first section of every Regular window. It holds the tabs that aren’t in a named group, and it can’t be renamed or deleted.
Can a group contain another group?
No. A group holds tabs only, one level deep.
What can I do with a whole group?
Right-click the group to rename it, copy the links of all its tabs, send the whole group to a new window, or delete it. Delete Group closes all of its tabs. A group of two to eight tabs can also be shown side by side with Tile Group.
What happens when I close a group’s last tab?
Bigfoot asks first, because closing the last tab also removes the group.
Can Private tabs be in a group?
Yes, but Regular and Private tabs never share a group. To move a page between them, use Clone as Private or Open in Regular, which opens a fresh copy of the page without its history or website data.
Side-by-side pages
What does tiling do?
Tiling shows several existing tabs together. Drag a tab onto an available tile target, or use Tile Group on a group of two to eight tabs when the window has enough room. Each tile keeps its own page.
Which page do the address bar and page controls affect?
The active tab. Click the tile you want to work with before using its page controls. Selecting a tab outside the tiled set shows that tab alone; returning to a member shows the set again.
Does Untile close a page?
No. Untile takes a tab out of the arrangement and shows it on its own. Closing a tab is a separate action.
Opening a link as a tile
How do I open a link beside the page I’m on?
Right-click the link, choose Open as Tile, and pick Left, Right, Top, or Bottom. The link opens in a new tab, tiled on that side of the page you’re on.
Is there a shortcut?
On a Mac, Command-Option-click a link. The new tile goes on the right, or at the bottom when there isn’t room on the right. You can change the shortcut for Open Link as Tile in Settings, under Shortcuts.
Why didn’t the link open as a tile?
Every tile needs a minimum amount of room. If the side you chose would make a tile too small, Bigfoot says There is not enough room to open this link as a tile. and opens nothing. Make the window larger or choose another side.
