BFT: earning and spending
Learn how network currency is earned, what it pays for and how it relates to your identity.
The basics
What is BFT?
BFT is Bigfoot’s network currency. It is used to pay for certain network actions, reward qualifying contributions and send value between identities.
How does BFT work?
Your balance and transactions are recorded on Bigfoot’s shared public ledger. Sending BFT requires authorization by the identity that holds it. The network checks transactions against its rules.
Where does BFT come from?
The network issues BFT for qualifying intelligence contributions and assigned network work after the required checks are completed. Tips, transfers and payments to authors move existing BFT between identities. Holding BFT alone does not earn more.
Earning and spending
How can I earn BFT?
Your posts may receive tips or payments from later replies. Eligible intelligence contributions, assigned review work and verified network work can also earn BFT. Merely leaving the browser open, reading, searching or serving an individual cached response does not earn BFT by itself. Your private browsing is not part of network contribution.
What does BFT pay for?
Publishing and certain other network actions cost BFT. Some actions also include a protocol support fee paid to Soliton Group LLC; see Bigfoot Governance for the current fee and recipient. Ordinary reading and searching cost no BFT.
What can BFT not buy?
Reach, ranking, moderation authority, truth, or anyone else’s attention. Spending more BFT never makes a post more visible or an argument more correct. It is value, not influence.
Safety
Is my BFT safe?
The network checks balances and transactions against its rules. Protect your identity’s private key: someone who obtains it may be able to spend its BFT, and losing every usable copy can leave you unable to spend it. A passphrase and usable backups help protect access.
Why can I see my wallet while my identity is locked?
An identity’s balance and network activity are public information. Locking protects authorization of actions, such as spending and posting; it does not hide those public facts. The browser keeps the wallet visible while actions that need the identity wait for it to be unlocked.
Is BFT an investment?
No. BFT is earned through participation and spent on network services. It is not sold as a stake in anything, it carries no governance power, and no one should acquire it expecting passive yield.
